how you doin'?

*Tugs collar*, anyone else find it a bit hot in here? Time to wake up! You’re definitely in the midst of burnout right now. When you’re not working, you’re thinking about work. The Sunday Scaries are your worst enemy. You don’t have time for yourself, let alone other people. You wonder if the problem is really the work/company/team or if you’re just not cut out for any of this.

When someone asks you how things are…

…you find yourself saying things like:

“Meh.”

*deep, long, knowing sigh*

*20-minute rant*

“I need a drink.”

“This is fine!” *said in the hysterical voice of someone who is standing in the middle of a fiery hell and is most certainly not fine*

Your friends and family are probably noticing…

...your (emotional or physical) absence. When you’re not trying to catch up on a mountain of work or putting out "fires", you’re passed out or spending much-needed alone time just to recharge. You’re irritable at everyone and everything and spend your weekends depressed because you have to go back to work on Monday. You're acutely aware that it "could be worse" but you're just straight up Not Having A Good Time™.

You might want to consider…

...getting help from a loved one or a professional. You’re trapped in your own misery right now and need an objective perspective. You also need to prioritize yourself much more: stop worrying about whether you are or aren’t being productive. You’re not a machine––rest is never a bad thing.

You’ll want to talk to your manager about…

...some time off and a plan for how you'll manage your workload and schedule moving forward. Maybe you need an extra pair of hands or two?

Cool Off by...

...fast-tracking that vacation and setting clear boundaries on your calendar between what is work time and what is personal time.

The Technical Definition of “Burnout”

According to the World Health Organization, “burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed […] Burnout refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.”
